final rationale
Mean of 2 draws (0.63, 0.63) after one crux research pass. (0) Not resolved. AAA shows NJ regular at $4.2449 on 10/18, about 14.5¢ above the strike. Only the single Dec 31 AAA reading counts, and it must be strictly above $4.1000. (a) About 74 days, roughly 10.5 weeks, remain. (b) If nothing changes, NJ stays near $4.24 and resolves Yes. But the price has fallen about 19¢ in a month, and the usual seasonal fade into late December points down. (c) No: a post-midterm US–Iran deal or Hormuz reopening, or just the seasonal winter-blend and demand decline at 1.5–2¢ a week, takes NJ under $4.10. Kloza's national ~$4.11 end-December call, with NJ's 5–9¢ discount, implies about $4.02–4.06. The EIA also reportedly sees the national average under $4 in December, though that figure is unverified. (d) Yes: Brent holds $100–110, consistent with a futures curve above $100 through March 2027. Pumps have not yet absorbed this week's crude rally, inventories are tight, and NJ holds $4.15–4.30. The Kalshi anchor is 86–90%, but the book is very thin (bid 12 / ask 94). Independent forecasters averaged about 0.56. In this regime a 15¢ move over 10 weeks is well within normal volatility, and the expected drift is downward. On the other hand, the crude rally and EIA's 'slow decrease' language support a cushion. I discount the market substantially, to roughly 0.6–0.65.

Planner reasoning
The question asks whether AAA's New Jersey regular gas average will be above $4.10 on Dec 31, 2026. The Kalshi price is the anchor, and the AAA NJ page shows the current level. FRED gasoline and crude series (weekly retail regular gas, East Coast gas, WTI) give the trend and seasonal context. Related Kalshi gas markets add cross-market signals.

Research loops, bottom lines
- current state: NJ regular is about $4.25 (Oct 17), roughly 15 cents above the strike, and has drifted down slowly. Crude jumped this week to about $100–110, which argues against a sharp decline. The outcome rests on whether the Iran/Hormuz situation and crude hold through Dec 31 and on the usual fall–winter seasonal softening.
- base rate: Spot is about 14 cents above the strike, and the national price has been above $4 for nearly three months. The seasonal drift and the EIA's easing path (Brent from $105 in Q4 to $84 in 2027) lean down, but crude near $100 and the geopolitical volatility make a swing of more than 15 cents either way over 2.5 months ordinary. The base rate therefore favours "above" only modestly, and the outcome depends on the oil path.
- yes case: The Yes case is that NJ is about 14.5¢ over the strike, crude futures are above $100 through March 2027, and the Iran–US deadlock leaves no near-term reopening. Stock buffers are thinner, and the current pump price matches the RBOB level. Only a Hormuz deal or a demand collapse would take NJ below $4.10 by Dec 31.
- no case: The NO case is that there are about 10 weeks for a roughly 15¢ slide. The EIA has the national average under $4 in December, Kloza's $4.11 national figure implies NJ near $4.05, and retail is already falling while gasoline futures lag crude. Against that, the crude rally, the record count of Hormuz attacks and tight inventories mean this rests on de-escalation or demand easing, and Kloza and De Haan both treat year-end as near a coin flip around $4.
Crux follow-up
- Neither side is clearly favoured on fundamentals. The status quo (about $4.25 with Brent near $110 and tight stocks) leaves a roughly 15¢ cushion. Against that, the Kloza and seasonal-fade math implies NJ near or just under $4.10, and any Iran de-escalation would push it below. EIA's text points to only a slow decline, which supports Yes more than the forecasters' paraphrase suggests, and the new crude rally argues against a quick slide. Overall the evidence leans modestly toward Yes but is high

report: current state
- [2026-10-17] AAA's state page shows NJ regular at $4.2525, about 15 cents above the $4.10 strike. The national average is $4.3085, and the Yahoo/AAA tracker for that day lists NJ at the same $4.2525. https://yahoo.com/news/us/articles/gas-prices-10-17-26-142905690.html (search snippet; the AAA page itself, https://gasprices.aaa.com/state-gas-price-averages/, returned 403 on direct fetch).
- [2026-10-16] AAA NJ regular was $4.266. The state series since Oct 1 is $4.32 (Oct 2), $4.281 (Oct 7), about $4.30 (Oct 11–13), $4.29 (Oct 14) and $4.266 (Oct 16). This is a slow drift down of roughly 1–2 cents per week at most. https://yahoo.com/news/us/articles/gas-prices-10-16-26-143005037.html
- [2026-10-13] AAA Northeast's survey has NJ at $4.30, against $4.29 a week earlier, $4.41 a month earlier and $3.01 a year earlier. It says Northeast prices are on a "gentle downward trend" helped by gasoline imports. Northeast gasoline stocks are 53.7M bbl, still more than 10% below the five-year seasonal average. Prices "remain vulnerable" to geopolitical volatility. https://magazine.northeast.aaa.com/daily/newsroom/northeast-pump-prices-inch-down-but-remain-at-record-highs-for-autumn/
- [2026-10-15] The AAA national average is $4.33, down a couple of cents on the week. AAA says crude is "once again nearing $100" a barrel. This is the first October on record with a national average above $4. https://gasprices.aaa.com/news/
- [2026-10-16/17] Crude is rallying. Brent hit about $109.9, its highest since May 19. WTI was about $101.4, up about 10% on the week, on Strait of Hormuz attacks and a large US crude draw. Brent's December futures settled at $105.92 on Oct 16 per one report, so sources differ on the exact level. RBOB gasoline futures were about $3.235 on Oct 17. https://srpske.rs/en/news/ekonomija/2026/10/17/brent-oil-hits-110-dollars-highest-since-may and https://oilprice.com/
- [2026-10-17] Context is the US–Iran war, now in its seventh month. The national average was $2.98 before the war and peaked at $4.56 in May. Diesel hit a record $6.53 in September. https://fortune.com/2026/10/17/iran-war-cost-us-household-2000-energy-prices-interest-rates-military-spending

- [2026-08-19] NJ regular was about $3.97, and the national average was above $4 from late July. NJ has therefore been below $4.10 within the last two months. This figure comes from a third-party AAA mirror. https://fuelwide.com/gas-prices/usa/new-jersey
- [2026-09-08] NJ was $4.27, up from $4.16 a week earlier, as prices surged on Gulf tensions. https://magazine.northeast.aaa.com/daily/newsroom/pump-prices-surge-across-the-northeast/
- [2026-10-16] NJ Turnpike and Parkway Sunoco regular is $4.389. NJTA adjusts it up to three times a week based on a survey of NJ stations. https://www.njta.gov/travel-resources/fuel-prices/
- [2026-10-15] AAA says gasoline typically declines in autumn on lower seasonal demand. Gasoline production is falling and stocks are rising slightly (208.3M bbl). https://wrnjradio.com/national-gas-prices-remain-above-4-a-gallon-as-crude-oil-prices-stay-high-aaa-says/
- [2026-10-08] Hurricane Isaias is cited by AAA as a risk to Gulf Coast refining. https://newsroom.aaa.com/2026/10/pump-prices-remain-at-record-highs-for-autumn/
BOTTOM LINE: NJ regular is about $4.25 (Oct 17), roughly 15 cents above the strike, and has drifted down slowly. Crude jumped this week to about $100–110, which argues against a sharp decline. The outcome rests on whether the Iran/Hormuz situation and crude hold through Dec 31 and on the usual fall–winter seasonal softening.

- [2026-10-18] AAA's New Jersey regular average was $4.2449 on 10/18/26. It was $4.3026 a week earlier, $4.4314 a month earlier and $2.9833 a year earlier. The state's record is $5.0589 (6/13/22). The strike of $4.10 is about 14.5¢ (3.5%) below spot. https://gasprices.aaa.com/?state=NJ
- [2026-10-18] The AAA national average was $4.2988 on 10/18/26. New Jersey has been about 5–9¢ below the national average. https://gasprices.aaa.com/?state=NJ
- [2026-10-15] AAA says the national average has been above $4 since late July. It was $4.33 on 10/15, down a couple of cents on the week, with crude "once again nearing $100 per barrel". AAA notes that fall normally brings lower prices, but oil volatility has produced seasonal record highs this year. https://newsroom.aaa.com/2026/10/gas-prices-not-budging-much-as-crude-oil-remains-high/
- [2026-10-14] The national average has topped $4 on 158 days in 2026, a record, according to GasBuddy. The cause is the Iran war and the Strait of Hormuz supply shock. The national average was below $3 before the war. https://abcnews.com/Business/gas-prices-set-record-highest-number-days-4/story?id=137253203
- [2026-10-06] The EIA October STEO has Brent averaging $105/b in 4Q26, up $14 from the prior month's forecast. It falls to $84/b in 2027. The EIA assumes Middle East flows stay constrained through 4Q26 but gradually improve. https://www.eia.gov/outlooks/steo/
- [2026-10-06] EIA's annual retail gasoline forecast is $3.91 for 2026 and $3.56 for 2027, revised up from $3.84 and $3.35. September's average was $4.35. The 2026 annual figure implies lower prices in Q4 than the current level only if the EIA's 2026 figure of $3.91 is read against a year-to-date average of about $3.86 (Finder). That is a weak signal, and I have not seen the EIA's monthly path for December. https://www.eia.gov/outlooks/steo/
- [2026-10-01] AAA's national average was $4.41 on 10/1, after $4.48 a week earlier. September averaged $4.33, a record for the month. Late-September and early-October prices were above the $4.10 equivalent. https://gasprices.aaa.com/national-average-dips-following-record-setting-september/
- [2026-10-09] New Jersey was $4.26 on 10/8–10/9, the same as a month earlier. The New Jersey price is much stickier than the national price. https://www.roi-nj.com/2026/10/09/industry/energy-utilities/aaa-says-gasoline-prices-nationwide-staying-at-record-highs-for-autumn-price-down-6-cents-in-n-j/
- [2026-08-19] New Jersey was $3.97 on 8/19. In 2026 the state ranged from about $3.82 to $4.44 (June to October) in one tracker's history. It was $3.82 on 3/20, when the war-driven rise was beginning. Within-year swings of 40–60¢ over 2–3 months are therefore normal this year. https://fuelwide.com/gas-prices/usa/new-jersey and https://gasprices.aaa.com/page/3/?state=NJ
- [Historical base rate] Typical seasonal pattern: pump prices fall from October into December as the winter-blend switch and lower demand take effect. In 2020 New Jersey stayed flat, at $2.22–2.24 in late October (AAA Northeast). Normal moves over 2.5 months are roughly ±10–15%. A 3.5% fall needed to resolve No is within one standard move. A 2026 shock regime means the volatility is higher than normal. https://press.northeast.aaa.com/?p=293
- [2026-10-14] The September CPI showed gasoline up more than 9% month on month. Diesel is about $6.3, and East Coast distillate inventories are about 20% below average. Tight product markets lift East Coast crack spreads, which supports New Jersey prices. https://www.eia.gov/outlooks/steo/
- [2026-10-02] The G7 announced a release of oil or products on 10/2, and the EIA forecast does not include it. The US SPR exchange of 40 million barrels was announced 9/29. These are downside risks to the price. https://www.eia.gov/outlooks/steo/
BOTTOM LINE: Spot is about 14 cents above the strike, and the national price has been above $4 for nearly three months. The seasonal drift and the EIA's easing path (Brent from $105 in Q4 to $84 in 2027) lean down, but crude near $100 and the geopolitical volatility make a swing of more than 15 cents either way over 2.5 months ordinary. The base rate therefore favours "above" only modestly, and the outcome depends on the oil path.

report: yes case
YES means: AAA's New Jersey regular-grade average is strictly above $4.1000 on Dec 31, 2026.
- [2026-10-16] Brent's front-month futures path supports Yes. The Dec Brent settle was $109.86, and the curve stays above $100 through the March 2027 contract ($101.53). The first contract under $100 is April 2027, at $99.41. The Dec 2027 contract is $86.69. Brent is therefore priced near $100 or higher on the Dec 31 date. EIA's own 4Q26 Brent forecast is $105. - [2026-10-16] Bank forecasts mostly sit at or above levels consistent with $4+ pump prices. Morgan Stanley (Oct 13) has $105 for 4Q and $100 for 1Q27. Goldman (Oct 12) has $90 by December, with a bull case of $125 and "significant upside risk". Only Citi's Sept 3 call ($70) is a clear low-price case, and it depends on Hormuz reopening. Same ENB source as above.
- [2026-10-16] Physical crude is much tighter than futures. Dated Brent was $126.55 on Oct 14, and the IEA cites about $134. Spot Brent has closed at $100+ on 82 of 158 trading days since March 1. A physical premium of $15–25 over the futures prompt month tends to feed refiners' costs. Same ENB source.
- [2026-10-18] Diplomacy is deadlocked. Iran's FM Araqchi said the seven-day Hormuz reopening offer is "still on the table". It requires lifting the US blockade and oil sanctions and ending hostilities on all fronts. The US insists on nuclear concessions first, and Iran says "there isn't" any US honesty. The interim ceasefire collapsed in mid-September. A deal would be needed to pull crude sharply lower, and the dispute is unresolved. https://gcaptain.com/iran-urges-us-to-accept-proposal-to-reopen-strait-of-hormuz/ (Reuters)
- [2026-10-04/15] Iran said Hormuz stays closed until its seven conditions are met, and the president called the talks "meaningless". A tracker rates the strait "CRITICAL", with Brent settles of $104–106 through Oct 14. That means crude was already high before the Oct 16 jump. https://global-energy-flow.com/hormuz/
- [2026-10-16] Supply buffers are depleting. The IEA says effective OPEC+ spare capacity is 0.27 mb/d. Global inventories are 509M bbl below pre-war levels. The US SPR is at 283M bbl, forecast by EIA to reach about 243M by December. IEA members have about 100M bbl of releases left, so the stock-release cushion is shrinking. The IEA sees the market in deficit through year-end. Source: ENB article above, citing IEA/EIA.
- [2026-10-16] A new crude-independent upward driver is Ukraine's strikes on Russian refineries. These pushed Friday's rally, with Ukraine vowing to continue; an earlier July report (Yahoo Finance) put Russian refining knocked out at up to 40%. Also, diesel is $6.33 nationally and ULSD futures are about $4.90. A strong distillate market lifts refinery margins and discourages maximising gasoline output. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/16/oil-price-today-iran-strait-hormuz-ukraine-russia.html and https://energynewsbeat.co/crude-oil/hormuz-mines-russian-refinery-fires-and-a-25-gas-gap-what-moved-your-fuel-bill-this-week/
- [2026-10-16] RBOB futures settled at $3.2354 (Nov contract). Adding the typical wholesale-to-pump spread (taxes, distribution, margin) of about $0.95–1.05 for NJ gives roughly $4.2–4.3, in line with the current NJ price of $4.24–4.25. This is my arithmetic, not a sourced estimate. The NJ pump price is therefore consistent with current futures rather than being a lagging overshoot. If Nov RBOB stays near $3.2, no further decline is implied. Source: Bloomberg energy page, https://www.bloomberg.com/energy
- [2026-10-15] A year-on-year precedent for seasonal declines being overridden is that the national average has not fallen below $4 since late July, despite the autumn drop in demand. The first October with the national average above $4 is on record, and NJ in particular fell only about 2 cents a week through October. Reference: the AAA pages cited in the colleagues' reports.
- [2026-10-18] In the Sept 8 surge episode, NJ rose from $4.16 to $4.27 in a week, from the colleagues' report. The 2026 history shows NJ went from about $3.97 (Aug 19) to $4.33 (Sept) on a Hormuz flare. A repeat of such a spike would put NJ well above $4.10, and escalation scenarios (Goldman bull case $125 Brent) would push it higher. Source: Fox live coverage on Oct 18 says Trump has paused strikes ahead of the midterms, but Iran is still claiming control of Hormuz. https://www.foxnews.com/live-news/us-iran-war-peace-talks-oil-strait-hormuz-trump-october-18
The single most likely path to YES: no Hormuz deal is signed and implemented before mid-December, so Brent stays around $100–110 as the curve implies. NJ regular then holds roughly $4.15–4.30 into year-end. The prerequisites are:
- The seasonal drift stays at the 1–2 cent per week seen in October, which would leave about $4.0–4.1 only if it accelerated. At that pace NJ is still about $4.15–4.20 by Dec 31.
- No large SPR/IEA release or other policy action lowers prices.
- Northeast gasoline imports stay adequate.
BOTTOM LINE: The Yes case is that NJ is about 14.5¢ over the strike, crude futures are above $100 through March 2027, and the Iran–US deadlock leaves no near-term reopening. Stock buffers are thinner, and the current pump price matches the RBOB level. Only a Hormuz deal or a demand collapse would take NJ below $4.10 by Dec 31.
NOT FOUND: A December-dated RBOB or gasoline futures price, any scheduled diplomatic event or deadline before Dec 31, and the EIA's monthly retail gasoline path for December.
report: no case
YES means: AAA's New Jersey regular-gasoline average is strictly above $4.1000 on Dec 31, 2026.
- [2026-10-16] The Money.com/AOL piece reports that the EIA's October STEO has the national average falling below $4 in December. The EIA expects refinery output to recover after maintenance and winter demand to be lower, so inventories rebuild. This is the official forecast pointing to NO. The EIA also says its forecast carries "above-average uncertainty" and that tight gasoline stocks could limit the decline. https://www.aol.com/articles/gas-prices-could-finally-fall-175501000.html
- [2026-10-16] Tom Kloza (Gulf Oil) puts the national average near $4.11 at the end of December. NJ has recently run about 5.4¢ below the national average ($4.2449 vs $4.2988 on 10/18, per the base-rate report). That discount would put NJ near $4.05–4.06, under the strike. Kloza himself says "something on either side of $4" is plausible, so this is a thin margin. He also says seasonal lows usually come between mid-December and the end of January, which fits the Dec 31 reading date. https://www.aol.com/articles/gas-prices-could-finally-fall-175501000.html
- [2026-10-18] Gasoline futures fell about 1.8% on the week to Oct 16 even though WTI rose 10.4%. Crude's rise is therefore not yet passing through to wholesale gasoline. The ENB piece says the week's pressure is on diesel and heating oil, not gasoline. November RBOB was about $3.235, down from about $3.295 on Oct 9. Pump prices are lagging wholesale, which supports further easing. https://energynewsbeat.co/crude-oil/hormuz-mines-russian-refinery-fires-and-a-25-gas-gap-what-moved-your-fuel-bill-this-week/
- [2026-10-18] The national average is down 6¢ on the week even with crude spiking. Retail has been drifting lower through a rally that is already underway. That is status-quo inertia toward NO. NJ would need to fall only about 14.5¢ (3.5%) over 10 weeks. https://energynewsbeat.co/crude-oil/hormuz-mines-russian-refinery-fires-and-a-25-gas-gap-what-moved-your-fuel-bill-this-week/
- [2026-10-18] Trump told Newsmax he expects a deal ending the war only after the Nov 3 midterms. Iran's foreign minister says Hormuz reopens "on the sixth day" if its conditions are met. A deal in November or December would remove risk premium quickly. Earlier this year, a tentative US–Iran deal took the national average below $4 in June. The ceasefire announcement in April cut gasoline futures by over 7% in a week. https://energynewsbeat.co/crude-oil/hormuz-mines-russian-refinery-fires-and-a-25-gas-gap-what-moved-your-fuel-bill-this-week/ and https://tradingeconomics.com/commodity/gasoline/forecast
- [2026-10-14] Analysts quoted by Reuters see a limited price range. Nissan Securities expects WTI at $90–100, with extra Russian diesel exports limiting sharp moves in either direction. The administration is also working to ease prices through Russian diesel waivers and SPR loans. A DOE solicitation for 17M barrels of SPR crude closes Oct 21. The G7 release and the 40M-barrel exchange from the earlier reports are also on offer, but the June SPR offer drew only 500k of 40M barrels. https://tribune.com.pk/story/2634759/oil-prices-climb-as-iran-deploys-new-tactics-to-target-ships-transiting-hormuz
- [2026-10-14] Counter-evidence, since the NO case must address it: Iran is reported to be deliberately keeping oil prices high before the midterms. Attacks on ships were 23 so far in October, almost double the average. Brent settled at $109.86 on the week, a five-month high. NO therefore needs de-escalation or demand-driven easing, not just seasonality. https://www.rte.ie/news/business/2026/1014/1595326-world-oil-prices/ and https://www.foxnews.com/live-news/us-iran-war-peace-talks-oil-strait-hormuz-trump-october-18
- [2026-10-14] NJ regional detail: statewide $4.29, with the cheapest markets (Camden, Trenton, NJ-Philadelphia) at $4.23–4.25. Camden County is already at $4.18 in the Oct 9 ROI-NJ report. The statewide average is a blend, so a 10-cent broad slide would pull the average toward the strike. NJ fell from about $4.42 a month earlier to $4.29. This is a roughly 13¢ decline in a month despite a rising crude backdrop. https://nj1015.com/nj-gas-prices-current-latest/ and https://www.roi-nj.com/2026/10/09/industry/energy-utilities/aaa-says-gasoline-prices-nationwide-staying-at-record-highs-for-autumn-price-down-6-cents-in-n-j/
- [2026-10-05] An EIA-based estimate has NJ at about $4.16 for the week of Oct 5, much nearer the strike than AAA's $4.28–4.30. This is an estimate, not an AAA figure, and it does not settle anything. It does show that the EIA's regional view of NJ is lower than AAA's. https://usgasgauge.com/gas-prices/new-jersey
- [2026-10-08/09] Resolution mechanics: a single AAA reading on Dec 31 decides it, strictly above $4.1000. There is no averaging and no "ever above" clause. Any path that dips below $4.10 by Dec 31 resolves NO even if prices were higher earlier, and the whole Oct–Dec stretch of $4.25+ does not count. Late December is the seasonal low in demand. https://www.roi-nj.com/2026/10/09/industry/energy-utilities/aaa-says-gasoline-prices-nationwide-staying-at-record-highs-for-autumn-price-down-6-cents-in-n-j/ and https://www.aol.com/articles/gas-prices-could-finally-fall-175501000.html
- [2026-10-01] Precedent for a fast drop within this war: NJ was $3.97 on Aug 19, and the national average fell from $4.56 in May to under $4 in June. A 15-cent drop is small relative to the 40–60¢ swings seen in 2026. https://www.roi-nj.com/2026/10/01/industry/energy-utilities/aaa-reports-national-average-gasoline-price-eased-after-record-setting-september-price-in-n-j-slid-6-cents/ and https://www.aol.com/articles/gas-prices-could-finally-fall-175501000.html
BOTTOM LINE: The NO case is that there are about 10 weeks for a roughly 15¢ slide.

CRUX: Where the NJ AAA regular price will sit on Dec 31 relative to $4.10. NJ is now about $4.25, so the question is whether the usual seasonal fade plus the EIA/Kloza forecasts take it below $4.10 (about 15¢ lower), or whether a Brent price near $110 holds it up.
- **Current level.** AAA NJ regular was $4.2525 on 10/17/26, when the national average was $4.3085 (https://gasprices.aaa.com/todays-state-averages/). NJ was $4.33 on 10/1 (https://www.roi-nj.com/2026/10/01/industry/energy-utilities/aaa-reports-national-average-gasoline-price-eased-after-record-setting-september-price-in-n-j-slid-6-cents/). That is a drop of about 8¢ in 16 days, or 4–5¢ a week (a slower pace than the forecasters' 4–6¢/week). NJ sits about 5–9¢ below the national average on the sources' differing dates.
- **Decline is flattening.** NJ was $4.27 on 10/16, down only 2¢ on the week by one aggregator's reading (https://gas-price-today.com/states/new-jersey/). It was $4.29 on 10/14 (https://snjtoday.com/new-jersey-drivers-now-pay-19-more-per-fill-up-but-camden-county-has-the-lowest/). The national average was $4.36 on 10/15, down from $4.39 a week earlier (https://www.finder.com/economics/gas-prices). The slide may be slowing as crude rallies.
- **EIA October STEO (published about 10/6).** EIA forecasts Brent averaging $105/b in 4Q26, $14 above its prior forecast. It expects retail gasoline to be "about the same in October as September" (September averaged $4.35) and then to "slowly decrease with crude oil prices". It also expects gasoline crack spreads to stay above seasonal norms into early 2027 because of low US inventories (https://www.eia.gov/outlooks/steo/pdf/steo_full.pdf and https://www.eia.gov/outlooks/steo/report/us_oil.php). The annual averages are $3.91 for 2026 and $3.56 for 2027. I could not retrieve the monthly table, so I could not confirm the "national December under $4" figure the forecasters cited. Note that EIA's October text expects only a slow decline.
- **Kloza (Gulf Oil), reported 10/16.** He estimates the national average near $4.11 at the end of December. He expects prices to stay above $4 through the midterms and says "something on either side of $4" is possible by year-end. He would bet on a national average above $4 heading into 2027 (https://www.aol.com/articles/gas-prices-could-finally-fall-175501000.html). A national $4.11 with NJ at its recent 5–9¢ discount implies NJ roughly $4.02–4.06, a little below the strike. The forecast has little margin either way. Kloza also says seasonal lows typically arrive between mid-December and late January. EIA warns of "above-average uncertainty" (https://money.com/will-gas-prices-go-down-before-end-of-2026/).
- **Crude is rallying.** Brent settled at $109.86 on 10/16, its highest since 5/19. It rose 4.9% on the week, and WTI rose more than 10%. Drivers were Hormuz tanker attacks, Houthi strikes on Saudi infrastructure and refinery strikes in Russia (https://discoveryalert.com/news/brent-oil-price-110-hormuz-saudi-russia-october-2026/ and https://www.businesssoftoday.in is not used; see https://www.businesstoday.in/markets/story/brent-hits-110-as-hormuz-ship-attacks-houthi-strikes-on-saudi-trigger-oil-rally-562207-2026-10-17). Kpler data show Hormuz flows at about 68% of the pre-war baseline in the week to 10/13 (https://oilprice.com/Latest-Energy-News/World-News/Oil-Prices-Head-for-Weekly-Gain-as-Hormuz-Attacks-Rattle-Markets.html). The crude rally on 10/16 came after the 10/15 pump price data, so retail has not yet reflected it.
- **Thin inventories.** The week ending 10/9 saw a crude draw of 8.6M barrels, and distillate stocks are about 12% below the five-year average. The SPR is at 283M barrels, the lowest since 1982 (https://global-energy-flow.com/shortages/united-states/forecast/). That source is a low-reliability blog. Its December national scenarios run from $3.80 (de-escalation) to $4.60 (standoff, its base case) to $6.10 (escalation).
- **Bank views are split.** Goldman's Q4 base case is roughly $80 Brent, while others see more than $120 if Hormuz attacks persist (https://discoveryalert.com/news/brent-oil-price-110-hormuz-saudi-russia-october-2026/). There is a precedent for a fast drop: the national average fell below $4 in June after a tentative US–Iran deal to reopen the strait (https://www.aol.com/articles/gas-prices-could-finally-fall-175501000.html). Late September's record national average of about $4.48 came from crack-spread spikes.
- **Resolution mechanics.** Only the single AAA NJ regular reading on 12/31 counts, and the threshold is strictly above $4.1000. NJ was $3.97 on 8/19, so it has risen 28¢ since then (https://fuelwide.com/gas-prices/usa/new-jersey).
BOTTOM LINE: Neither side is clearly favoured on fundamentals. Overall the evidence leans modestly toward Yes but is highly dependent on Hormuz news.

(0) Not resolved: AAA NJ regular is $4.2449 on 10/18/26, about 14.5¢ above the strike, and only the single Dec 31 AAA reading counts. (a) About 74 days remain, which is a long window given 40–60¢ swings in 2026 and the June post-deal drop below $4 nationally. (b) Status quo leans Yes but narrowly. NJ has slid from $4.43 a month ago to $4.24 now, though the pace has slowed to 1–5¢ a week. Brent at about $110 with futures above $100 through March and EIA's 'slow decrease' text support holding near $4.15–4.25. Kloza's roughly $4.11 national year-end call implies NJ near $4.05, and late December is the seasonal low. (c) No: a post-midterm US–Iran deal reopens Hormuz and removes risk premium, or seasonal fade plus refinery recovery and falling RBOB push NJ under $4.10. (d) Yes: the deadlock and attacks persist, Brent holds at $100 or more, and NJ stays at $4.15–4.35. The market's 90% (wide 12/94 spread, 86% close) looks overconfident relative to a roughly 15¢ cushion and a downside-skewed deal risk. I discount it but stay above 50% on the crude curve and EIA guidance.
